[Craic] references from our liturgy this week.

Hello Art;

Thomas King certainly is among the best storytellers I have heard recently. The Truth About Stories is a masterpiece, relaying the fact that all we are is “stories”.

His book that more directly deals with the story of “settlers”, and their/ our relationship with First Nations peoples is best told in a later book, called The Inconvenient Indian.

HOWEVER, if one wishes to read an author who is more direct in their approach, I would suggest, “Unsettling Canada: A National Wake-up Call by Arthur Manuel and Grand Chief Ronald M. Derrickson. For example:
“Canadian federal and provincial governments are telling their citizens and the world that everything is under control and that the only problem with Indigenous peoples is some sort of governance problem. They are trying to ignore our rights to self-determination and to economic control over our territories. But in the twenty-first century, the world is not in tune with Canada’s nineteenth-century colonialist approach.” (p. 159)

“We need a more active strategy that includes public education, direct action / assertion of rights, and a strong international campaign.” (p.219)

Maybe that strategy is what would benefit all racialized people(s), eh?
