They have a petition requesting that National Geographic withdraw their “Planetary Leadership” award to Justin Trudeau. As they say, Trudeau’s actions do not match his words.

Friends, 

This morning I woke up to some shocking news. Our Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, had been given a Planetary Leadership Award by National Geographic. 

I was stunned because, like you, I remember earlier this year when Justin Trudeau’s RCMP raided a peaceful land defense camp in Wet’suwet’en territory on behalf of a fracking pipeline company. And, I know that under Justin Trudeau’s leadership Canada has barely made a dent in reducing our emissions, which isn’t surprising when you remember that our climate goals are nowhere near the scale science and justice demand. 

But, that’s not at all. Right now, Justin Trudeau is spending billions of taxpayer dollars on the Trans Mountain pipeline. A pipeline that he bought, despite it undermining our chances of meeting our climate goals, and despite opposition from Indigenous communities along the route. 

None of this makes someone a “Planetary Leader.” That’s why I’m hoping you’ll join me in asking the National Geographic Society to revoke this award.  <https://act.350.org/go/214182?t=6&utm_medium=email&utm_source=actionkit&akid=132514%2E306008%2EoKjCE9>
I grew up reading National Geographic. Those dog-eared, yellow spined magazines were where I first learned about so much of the natural world. Because of that, I have a lot of trust and respect for National Geographic. 

That’s why it’s so important that when they hold someone up as a climate leader, that person truly deserves the title. And, unfortunately, Justin Trudeau just doesn’t. Words without action are meaningless and when it comes to the climate crisis, his actions just don’t match his words. 

We need to celebrate true climate leaders, and Justin Trudeau hasn’t proven himself to be one yet.
