For over a century now, these urban critics have written about how urban transportation gridlock and wealth disparity have hobbled our so-called “great” cities.

Actually, even the much lauded cultural centres of ancient Athens, Renaissance Florence and turn of the last century Vienna, among others, were also places of terrible poverty for most people.  

These world class cities need a new set of standards to gauge just how great they are since they are a long ways from providing optimum conditions most most of their populations.
