[Craic] new book by Charlie Angus - exposing corruption in the mining industry

The Star had a feature article today on the new book by  Charlie Angus. Many of us first met Charlie when he was involved with the Catholic Worker House in the east end of downtown Toronto.

Angus, who has published eight books, says it’s time to look past the polite, airbrushed histories we were taught in school and delve into the more complex lessons that can be learned from the settlement of the frontier.

“I think we’ve always known in the north that the story of the silver and gold mining rush was a lot wilder and at times darker than the official histories,” he said.
“What happened in Cobalt needs to be framed within a much broader discussion about the taking of the land across the Americas. People from all over the world came to loot one of the world’s great treasure boxes. But what is really fascinating are the social struggles and battles that to took place to create a multicultural and multiracial society in a time of serious social injustice.”
