[Craic] Peckford addresses anti-mandate rally Victoria 29/01/2022

I listened with interest to Brian Peckford’s impassioned defence  of our democracy here in Canada. It was lovely. He was talking about how our governments have become something very different than true and real expressions of the will of the people. On the occasion he did refer to the mandates he decried the lack of debate and discussion about the decision. He was arguing for a return to the ideals of a liberal, representative democracy that we believe we have here in Canada.

BUT!!!!, isn’t the question WHY? Why have things become as they are? What is meant by the swamp? What is the situation we are fighting? Isn’t it that politics has been overtaken by economic concerns? Our almost total (except maybe a bit for Covid) preoccupation with the economy, the market, business failures and/or growth, austerity, regulation/deregulation, lobbyists, high/low taxes, inflation, and on and on it goes. The freedom and liberty Peckford  speaks of is in the context of a vital, active democracy that makes decisions for the good of all the people, not just the few. It’s freedom to serve the common good is it not?
  
What I read of the Atlantic article on Singularity is right in step with this too I believe.
