[Craic] excellent videos of MLK

Allan – yes, I have seen that excellent video of MLK. Below are a few other good ones.

Yesterday, on Palm Sunday, Margaret and I attended a beautiful Psalm Sunday service – there were about 800 people at St Philip’s Anglican Church here in Charleston with a choir of 30. The homily was 40 minutes and was inspirational, except for the ending – he spoke about the significance of the cross and the resurrection, but then his main point was more about getting to heaven rather than living a Christian life here on earth.

Hi David;

Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. wrote a Letter From Birmingham City Jail in 1963. It was in response to a letter from eight “liberal”, and “white” clergy who called his non-violent resistance to segregation in that city “unwise and untimely”.

Isabel Wilkerson’s book, Caste” is an excellent exploration of the reasons why inequality continues. It is also an intriguing comparison of caste structures in India, America, and Nazi Germany.

Stay hopeful;
Allan

Allan – thanks for your note. As you know there is a lot of ‘slave history’ in Charleston, and the tourist guides point out how most of the large historic homes were built by slave owners.

When I asked him if anyone questioned the morality of the slave trade by the churches, I was told he was not aware of any. A few women raised the matter, but they eventually moved to Philadelphia.
“By the 1830s, the Grimké sisters had become well-known abolitionist activists, which made them complete outcasts in Charleston. In 1819, when Sarah Grimké was 27 years old, she traveled to Philadelphia alongside her father. She was deeply moved by the egalitarian, social justice oriented beliefs of the Quaker community: they actively challenged slavery, denouncing the institution as evil and believing that it was their duty to call for its abolition. They believed women were the spiritual equals of men and allowed them to hold positions of leadership. Furthermore, the Quakers that Sarah met believed that it was their duty to help anyone that was suffering.

It reminds me of the residential school system that went on for over 100 years with the blessing of all the mainline churches; and the harsh treatment of individuals who are homeless that is happening today.

Thanks David.

Yes, Friedman has an interesting perspective. I watched the whole interview and it seems that Israel has no “end game”; or at least none that they are willing to disclose.

Enjoy Charleston.

Ted – that was a good talk by Rabbi David Mivasair – I thought he clarified well how Zionism is a political ideology, and it was important that he emphasized how God had clear conditions on the Jewish people in terms of their presence in the lands of Israel. It was good to see many Jewish people present on zoom.

Margaret and I are taking a holiday this week in Charleston. One can see churches on almost every corner of the city, yet the history of the many Christians who came here has nothing to say about any efforts to end slavery – another example of how people of faith can be so blind to injustice.

This is an interesting talk:
