This new initiative increases Canada’s involvement in the oil and gas industry when we should be moving away from such fossil fuel developments. Regrettably, the Trudeau government's approval of the project shows blatant disregard of the dire warnings found in<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span><a href="https://ourcommons.us6.list-manage.com/track/click?u=ccaa7022bd5e28ec456d63cd3&id=89200b2215&e=5839026aaa" style="color: rgb(0, 124, 137); font-weight: normal; text-decoration: underline;" class="">the most recent IPCC climate change report</a><span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span>–that reducing emissions requires major transitions in the energy sector. <br class=""> <br class="">For Canada, significant changes would mean no new fossil fuel projects and an end to the billions in subsidies to big oil and gas, It would mean<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span><a href="https://ourcommons.us6.list-manage.com/track/click?u=ccaa7022bd5e28ec456d63cd3&id=e6a4798625&e=5839026aaa" style="color: rgb(0, 124, 137); font-weight: normal; text-decoration: underline;" class="">making meaningful investments in renewable energy, climate solutions, and better support for workers</a>. With the Bay du Nord getting the green light, it's hard to imagine any change to this appalling record.<br class=""> <br class="">The IPCC’s scathing report is clear – we’re running out of time to act! <br class=""> <br class="">While Prime Minister Trudeau and his government continue to ignore the IPCC’s call to action, I remain convinced that we can only make progress on the environment by reducing our emissions. We need a long-term strategy that includes investing in workers and helping to set them up for future success and stability in Newfoundland and Labrador and all regions of the country. <br class=""> <br class="">You can count on New Democrats to act on this climate emergency. <br class=""> <br class="">For example, we’ve recently introduced legislation, Bill C-245, calling for the Canada Infrastructure Bank to refocus its mandate and make the fight against climate change its top priority.
