On Monday, the Ford government announced a major expansion of for-profit health care in the province.<br> <br>The post-pandemic backlog for medical procedures is huge, and Premier Ford is right when he says “the status quo is not working.” But he’s wrong to suggest that redirecting public health care dollars to the profits of private companies is the answer.<br> <br>There is an alternative: We could adequately fund the public system.<br> <br>In<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span><a href="https://policyalternatives.us18.list-manage.com/track/click?u=50ab80acdbcc30e47a51c061b&id=cae8db9f6f&e=19c959fdfd" style="color: rgb(0, 124, 137); font-weight: normal; text-decoration: underline;">research published this week</a>, CCPA Ontario senior economist Sheila Block points out that Ontario ranks dead last among the provinces when it comes to funding health care. Based on 2021-22 data, Queen’s Park would have to spend an extra $591 a year, per person, just to reach the average of the other provinces. Funding health care in Ontario the way other provinces do would put more than $7 billion into the system, Sheila calculates. That’s a lot of operations and a lot of diagnostic procedures.<br> <br>Sadly, public spending in Ontario has lagged behind other provinces for more than a decade, and not only in health care. As Sheila points out, Queen’s Park simply isn’t making the “fiscal effort” that’s needed to keep our public services in good health.<br> <br>Instead, with its latest announcement, the Ford government is taking steps to boost corporate profits at a time when those profits are already at or near<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span><a href="https://policyalternatives.us18.list-manage.com/track/click?u=50ab80acdbcc30e47a51c061b&id=c866967ca6&e=19c959fdfd" style="color: rgb(0, 124, 137); font-weight: normal; text-decoration: underline;">record levels</a>.
