It’s a sobering read, but a necessary one. Last week, as I was researching a story about the Unitarian Shelter’s upcoming 15th anniversary, I came across a number of older renters who had ended up in the shelter when, for a variety of reasons, they lost their housing.
As I pivoted to writing specifically about unhoused seniors in our community, the phrase “This is not okay, this is not okay” kept running through my head, and I realized that as uncomfortable as it is, this is an issue we really need to look at.

In your words
"Firstly, thank you for everything you do. I value hearing a fresh perspective on Nanaimo from a news source I feel I can trust. I am truly grateful.
I am writing about your update [last] week that The City of Nanaimo has selected a street banner design by Nanaimo artist Amy Pye for its 2024 program. I am curious about the process of selection. I am a retired graphic designer, design educator and former member of Descan—Design Professionals of Canada, and based on past experience I think it is likely that the design/designer were selected through an open call competition. Such calls are unethical and undermine the work of creative professionals.
As Maynard Johnny Jr. pointed out in his Making Waves talk, the work of creatives is not valued in the same way as the work of other professions. He commented that BC Ferries low-balled him on his design for their ferries claiming that the project would be "good exposure" for him. We don't ask a dentist to straighten our teeth because we will smile a lot and give them good exposure. According to Wikipedia, creative competitions in architecture have a more than 2,500-year-old history. "The Acropolis in Athens was a result of an architectural competition in 448 B.C., as were several cathedrals in the Middle Ages." However, this approach has been an accepted part of everyday life since the arrival of crowd-sourcing and is one that creative professionals are continually running into.
The crowd-sourced contest for the design of the 2010 Vancouver Olympic logo created much discussion. Crowd-sourced content rarely undergoes the rigorous research that creative professionals might undertake if they were properly commissioned. Descan provides clients and design professionals with ground rules around this.
While there is a definite plus side to allowing any member of a community to see their artwork on street banners, there is also an important discussion around valuing and supporting creativity and creative professionals in our midst.
Thanks for reading."
