As November 11 th approaches, we think of it as Remembrance Day but that is only a part of it. November 11 th 1918 was the day that Germany and its opponents, the Allied countries, signed an agreement to stop fighting. It was first known as Armistice Day and was the first step in ending World War 1, 'the war to end all wars 'and a commitment to peace.

Veterans for Peace is an organization of military veterans and supporters working to build peace by educating the public about the true causes and costs of war. In his book, "Guys Like Me", Michael Messner, who belongs to this group, writes about the trauma of war and “ the deep moral injury” many veterans feel from having killed people, sometimes in great numbers. It is difficult sometimes for them to find voice to discuss their trauma.

This is an important time, as our government is greatly increasing our military budget, to honour and reflect on all the victims of war, the irrevocable damage to people and the planet and to think about how we can work towards the ending of wars, building empathy, cooperation and a culture of peace.
