Hello everyone,

To respond to Kathrin, it was my idea to do a letter to the Pope. I'm not Catholic and not religious, but I heard about the Pope's Easter message so close to our Fast Against Fighter Jets where we were asking people to fast, pray meditate, light candle etc.. The Pope condemned countries for investing in their military arsenals as "scandalous" and made me think about our action. I was going to send the letter personally, but others asked to sign on so I made it an open letter. On two calls that we have had, people thought the open letter to the Pope had utility to raise awareness of the issue and wanted to do it, so we pursued it. Some people are signing on and some people aren't. It is just one tactic to reach out the Catholic and faith community in Canada. Our Prime Minister is Catholic. I'm personally opposed to the Pope's and church's position on the LGBTQI community and women in the clergy, but I support his position on peace and climate. It is not so much getting the Pope's attention on this but getting Catholic Canadians' attention on our campaign.

If you or anyone else would like to write to another faith leader to get their support for our campaign against the fighter jets please go ahead. It would also be great to have any quotes from faith leaders. I've attached the letters here that you can modify if helpful.

Thank you so much for the extensive list of events and actions to do. I am so sorry that I could not attend the debrief - there was a Voice of Women Board meeting at the same time, and again, I cannot attend this evening. I do want to share a few thoughts , but first of all to all of you who are fasting I offer my admiration and support. Is it possible to have an idea of how many participants are involved in an extensive fast? Maybe I missed that info- I know Vanessa is committed to this action - so to Vanessa and Brendan and all others I offer my appreciation!

I would like to voice a concern about the letter to the pope. I see that there is a poster to publicize this move. I am not clear about the process, as a coalition, to ask for a representative of one religion to offer prayers. If the letter is used by one of the coalition's Christian groups ( and in the letter there is a clarification that their group stands against the jets and that  they are part of a coalition but not representing the coalition) I think that would be acceptable.  Can we ask for a support for our cause and ignore the Vatican's views on blessing same sex unions?

Further actions are an important discussion and I look forward to the notes.

The Pope has made peace a priority for his papacy. Every January 1st, the Pope gives his World Peace statement. In 2015, he released an important encyclical urging action on climate change. In his Easter address this year, the Pope said "The pandemic is still spreading, while the social and economic crisis remains severe, especially for the poor. Nonetheless - and this is scandalous - armed conflicts have not ended and military arsenals are being strengthened."

"Nutaui's Cap" is a children's book about the NATO fighter jet training in Labrador from the 1980s and how it adversely affected the Innu people and how they resisted this military activity in their territory. "Nitinikiau Innusi: I Keep the Land Alive" is based on Penashue's personal diaries of how she led the Innu campaign against NATO low-level flying and bomb testing on Innu land over two decades. Penashue and many Innu people were arrested and imprisoned for protesting and occupying the Goose Bay runways and they also travelled across Canada and Europe to raise awareness about their struggle to protect their land.

Authors Bob Bartel and Tshaukuesh Elizabeth Penashue (invited) will do a reading from their books and discuss the long, courageous struggle by the Innu people against the Canadian Air Force and NATO fighter jet testing in their territory.

We will also hear briefly from Tamara Lorincz, co-founder of the No New Fighter Jets Coalition and member of the Canadian Voice of Women for Peace, who will talk about the campaign to stop Canada from buying 88 new fighter jets for $77 billion and how you can help cancel this costly, carbon-intensive procurement.
