I have a friend who was the international president of the Global Midwives
Assn and who has worked tirelessly to bring this life-saving practice to
developing countries around the world. She has gone into over-drive this
past week, trying to help Afghani midwives and their families to get
flights to Canada before they are jailed or killed. Please read the
following missives that I have rec’d in the past 2 days – I have no idea
why I forgot to mention this as a prayer focus when we had liturgy this
Sunday. Here – late – is my and her plea.
Here it is......
Missive #1: On Sunday morning (15th) when the Taliban took Kabul I jumped
into non-stop work to get the families of 3 midwives who are refugees here
in Toronto to safety here in Canada - along with 100 other families in
their same circumstances - they had to flee overnight (some a few years
ago) due to Talbian threats and left spouse and family behind.
I initiated a media campaign and asked the Assoc of Ontario Midwives to
lend their media support and so far 2 press releases have gone out with
good media response - midwives only self-identifying as healthcare workers
to keep their families safe.... Am writing madly as I have just gotten off
a 2 hr ZOOM meeting with the 7 coordinators of these 105 families -
strategizing next steps to get the gov's attention to commit to evacuating
their families.
Please see The Globe article from today:
https://www.theglobeandmail.com/amp/canada/article-afghan-refugees-in-canada-plead-for-airlifts-of-family/
I have arranged articles in The Star, Sun, Global news, yahoo, Reuters, etc
(preferring not to be identified)- it has been busy....
And please see the Call to Action I wrote today (attached) - please
distribute as appropriate!
There is a twitter social media campaign that we also started through the
AOM - if you tweeted, it would be helpful...I signed on today!
Anyway, four 13 hour days later - am exhausted and mad as heck with the
Canadian government for not fulfilling their commitments to these
families! Sorry - am rambling, but wanted to get something off to you.
Send prayers for them and light and love and visions of their families
safely reunited. Right now it looks really, really grim.
#2 missive: Good morning - great news - the Federal Minister of Immigration
and Refugees called me (twice!) early Saturday evening (21st). He has
promised to help evacuate this group and has put his Chief of Staff on it
and assigned a coordinator within his department to work with me as the
representative of the Coordinating Group. This includes working with a
liaison on the ground in Kabul! to coordinate communication with the
refugees here in Canada and their families in Kabul as they evacuate. He
gave me his private cell number to facilitate any bumps in the road
ahead.. Now the real work of organizing folks and trying to get them to
the airport (which is closed right now to try to calm things down). There
are 90 mothers in the group of 125 - with a total of 370 kids. So the
logistics of getting these single females and children to the airport is in
itself a logistical issue - and we don't know when the call to start going
to the airport will come. People have had to wait in line-ups at the
airport for over 40 hours - and that is the well organized groups... And
all rests on the Americans being able to hold the airport and the Taliban
letting people pass to the airport...so please, please keep a fire burning
in your hearts that this evacuation goes well!
#3 missive: We are planning next steps with the families today to help
prepare them for evacuation....so prayers and focus for the impossible to
be possible.... honestly, and I am searingly serious about this, directing
prayers/intense focused energy to the evacuation of these now 400 children
and their mothers (and a few fathers!) is the most important and absolutely
necessary thing you can do. Working through the logistics is only working
in one realm. But IT WILL NOT WORK without folks dedicated to
praying/energy surrounding us and supporting this evacuation. Light a
candle and keep a candle lit until they are home. The candle is perfect
because it is a constant reminder that you are with them. Please, please
take up 'Lighting a candle for the Mothers and Children' and pass it on to
your network and beyond as your work. Or, simply, the prayers. This is
the work you are so good at....please take it up and run with it!!
Thank you so much, dear friends.
Pat
