I am sending this on to all of Taproot, knowing how generously you responded to my pleas for prayer and support a few days ago. Bridget, my friend the organizer (and midwife), wrote the missive below to all who are supporting her in her long days of organizing and pleading. I had to share this with you. This says so awesomely what love truly is. Pat
The most interesting thing working with this group is that, with all they have to lose, they are not angry or blaming. It seems almost foreign to them. And I realized in these last days how much of our activism here in the West is too often motivated by anger and blame and self-righteousness (count me among these!) - while what is motivating this group is love. They need in the purest sense (they are not whole without them) to be reunited with their family, the family being the very expression of love in a way that I don't think we fully appreciate.
It has been most astounding in these last days while working literally constantly with these 7 Afghan leaders - 4 women (midwives and a doctor) and 3 men (Drs and senior gov admin) to see them approach each issue with resolve, but no bitterness - not one word of anger or complaint at a Canadian government that has to date tragically let them down. Instead they are problem solving, with a deep belief that there is always a way - it is just up to us to find it (a belief I also share).. Even last night when I told them the evacuation was off, through their disbelief and despair and sobbing tears there was not one word of anger. There was only love and gratitude. And then resolve. When they let the families know through email, again the response was an overwhelming outpouring of love and gratitude not only to our team for all the work done on their behalf - but also to the many Canadians who are supporting this work with prayers - all of you. They said it was knowing that they were supported that mattered, that they felt heard. And that they were not giving up hope.
And then the sun rose in Toronto and we were back at it before noon, planning, strategizing. At 4 I heard from the Minister of Immigration's office - they wanted to know what we wanted - to take it into a meeting with the other Ministers. And now the PMs office is involved...
So now to you all, dear people - we are asking you to join us and keep your resolve and send your prayers and light and love to guide these mothers and children home - to put it into the universe in concert with the logistics - to open the hearts of people in power and give them the courage to do the right thing.
I have been more than blessed to be a part of this work. But you must know that it is the community gathered and supporting our work that is carrying us. Gratitude is everywhere. This is so incredible - love, when it is activated, really is more powerful than hate and anger - and feels so much better! I had not expected this. I have always been motivated by anger. And righteousness. I was taught it is the force that motivates change. I was wrong.
It isn't over (wrong again!). It is always an unfolding. Keep your candles lit, or carry a rosary, or small stone in your hand (I have been holding a small rosary for 4 days) - any constant reminder to be present to this work.
I have been thinking a lot about Moses through this - parting the sea through sheer belief and love for his people. We can surely do that!
WIth love and gratitude,
Bridget
