I have at hand a document prepared by the NIA (National Institue on Aging)
which is a public policy and research centre based at Ryerson. Its focus
is "to create a blueprint for better public policy and practices to address
the challenges presented by (US)
Canada's aging population."

The document is called Bringing Long-term Care Home. It's a proposal to
create a virtual long-term care at home program to support a more
cost-effective and sustainable way to provide long-term care across
Ontario. The person who is giving this to me has worked for years on
long-term care issues end gave this to me as an example of what of what is
going to be taking place at decision-making levels in Ontario. The summary
paragraph says that "A Virtual Long-term Care @Home Program will advance
the cost-effective and sustainable provision of long-term care in Ontario.

Rather than using allocated money to build more homes, the strongly urge
the money, plus new money, be used to help people remain at home, using a
new mix of local Primary Care, Home Care, community paramedicine and
Community Support Services.

There are about 35 pages to this proposal.

I understand that this in no way addresses the current crisis. But it's
useful to know that the future doesn't seem to include new and better
facilities. I have a problem with this idea - isolation is going to
continue to be a problem. And I haven't studied the proposal carefully yet.
But thought you'd be interested to hear about it.

Blessings to you and MaryLou,
Rosemary
