We did it! Bill C-12 for climate accountability was passed

Hello Catherine!

It was a dramatic process that kept us on the edges of our seats until the
11th hour, but we did it! *MPs and the Senate passed Bill C-12 for the
Net-Zero Emissions Accountability Act before their summer recess.* For the
first time, Canada has a law to ensure our government follows through on
promised climate action in a transparent, systematic and holistic way.

While Bill C-12 falls short of the international gold standard, it will
provide a foundation to ensure that Canada never misses another climate
target.* This legislation signals a new beginning for Canada’s expanding
climate movement.*

This is the result of hard work by so many of you, our partner
organizations, grassroots organizers and caring citizens. Together we
generated tens of thousands of petition signatures, hundreds of letters to
editors, social media ‘storming’, witness testimonies to strengthen the
bill, well-researched legal recommendations, published opinion pieces and
news articles. We’re proud to have the legal expertise of DSF’s climate
solutions director Sabaa Khan, who helped us advocate for passage of a
strengthened bill. *Teamwork and people power for the win!*

This bill earned the support of multiple political parties but not all. We
give a shout-out to the political representatives and senators who put
partisan politics aside to pass this bill into law.

*As usual, the work is not over.* The true test of this legislation will be
in its implementation, so we will continue to work with you to advocate for
strong implementation and for ever-increasing ambitious climate action.
Recent and ongoing extreme weather events are putting a fine point on the
need for urgent climate action.
