Great piece Catherine, I remember Harper's apology given with those dead
eyes from a man who refused to meet with one of the chiefs doing a hunger
strike to protest Canada's treatment of her people. The apology still
rings hollow as colonial politicians like Trudeau pretend that they are
honouring the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's recommendations.
Thankfully, the government and the Church are now being forced to reckon
with this part of our history whether they want to or not. Regrettably,
Trudeau's government continues to fight Indigenous settlements in the
courts while Canada's majority of bishops refuse outright apologies fearing
financial liabilities. We have a long way to go before we fully address
the suffering that this country and Church has inflicted on its original
inhabitants.

Peace

Greg
