Dear Brenda,

I’m writing to you about an important petition from Leadnow member Chavez
McDonald, who is *calling on Justin Trudeau to take urgent action to
support Indigenous communities, following the discovery of 215 children
buried in unmarked graves at the former Kamloops Residential School.* [1]

Here's a brief explanation of the campaign:

*Our communities are sharing in the collective grief of generations of
children, women, men & 2SLGBTQQIA persons who have been stolen, abused and
murdered.*

The bodies of 215 children were discovered buried on the grounds of the
Kamloops Indian Residential School, adding to the growing list of 4,100
children previously identified by the TRC (Truth and Reconciliation
Commission)’s Missing Children’s Project, and the ongoing genocide against
Indigenous women, girls and 2SLGBTQQIA persons.

*We ask for the Government of Canada to take swift and immediate action to
support our communities.*
We are in a moment of reckoning. Our federal leaders are honouring the 215
children with orange shirts and flags flown half-mast [2] — and while these
acts of recognition are important, *there’s a real danger they will decry
this atrocity and move on.*

If we can demonstrate that the public expects Prime Minister Trudeau’s to
make good on the promises he’s made to Indigenous peoples, we can show him
that simply *moving on isn’t an option.*

Here’s some more information about the campaign calling on *Justin Trudeau
to take swift and immediate action to support Indigenous communities:*

We ask for *preservation and forensic investigation of all schools* and
properties.

We ask that the Governments *stop fighting residential school settlements
and First Nation Inuit & Metis (FNIM) children in court.*

We ask that Governments do everything within their power to *protect FNIM
women, girls and 2SLGBTQQIA persons from ongoing genocide.*

We ask that Governments immediately *fund FNIM children equitably,*
including immediate funding for family finding and preventative well-being
services aimed at reducing the number of FNIM children in-care.
>From suing Indigenous children in court to building pipelines through
unceded lands, *the federal government constantly undermines the rights of
Indigenous peoples.* [3,4] This violence is nothing new — it’s built into
the very foundations of Canada. Non-Indigenous people all share
responsibility for undoing this legacy — and it starts with actions like
these.
