We pause in this moment, angry and heartbroken before the discovery

of the bodies of 215 young Indigenous children, buried on the site of a
residential school in Kamloops, BC.

We should not however be shocked or surprised. The Indigenous communities
from which these children were taken have always known of their loss. The
grief hangs over families and communities burdened both by
intergenerational trauma and a world that still looks away.

Let us have eyes to see and ears to hear. There are no words to adequately
express our shame and horror. We have looked away and we have failed both
as a Church and as a state.

We amplify the demand for justice made by Canada’s Indigenous peoples, both
from the government and from the Church.

While our commitment as a network is to amplify the voices of Palestinian
Christians and support the work for a just peace in the Holy Land, we must
also be part of the work for justice at home. We acknowledge the
connections between the struggles of Indigenous peoples everywhere.

Even as we reel from this week’s news and prepare to send this newsletter
out, in communities across this nation people are gathering to stand vigil
for four members of a family killed yesterday in London Ontario, for no
other reason that they were Muslim. We offer our most heartfelt condolences
as we commit to standing against Islamophobia and all forms of hate.

Listening to the voices of those whose existence is threatened because of
their identity or location, we offer solidarity and a deep listening
silence.
Action

1) Seek out Indigenous Friendship Centers in or near your community to
listen to and learn from the experiences of Indigenous people. We encourage
all of us to listen to the words of Indigenous peoples

as they respond to the finding of the 215 children.

2) We encourage everyone to *contact your local Bishop*

or directly the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops
<https://cjphl.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=822f8a0691910864147ca12c5&id=e7dee6346f&e=5600395fe4>
to advocate for the Church to do more for residential school survivors.
These were not the only lost children, and the work of truth and
reconciliation is not done. Encourage the local Bishop to *invite the Pope
to Canada to offer the formal apology *expected according to the Truth and
Reconciliation Commission’s findings.
