Bob,

*This is outrageous. In a massive power grab, Premier Ford is invoking the
notwithstanding clause *— overriding the Charter of Rights and Freedoms — *to
pass an election law the Supreme Court struck down* earlier this week. [1]

*He's called MPPs back to Queen's Park today,* to vote on new legislation
that would *make it harder for civil society groups to participate in
politics* — while doubling the amount wealthy donors can contribute to
political parties. [2]

Bob, we cannot underestimate how serious this is. If the legislation
passes, it will set a precedent worthy of dictatorships, not democracies:
that one man can override our rights, our freedoms — our entire
constitution, in order to get what he wants. With an election coming up in
a year, *Ford is desperate to muzzle the people his policies have hurt in
the past three years. If he wants to win, he needs them — us — to be
silent. *We cannot let him get away with this.

Bob, *cabinet ministers have the power to pressure Ford and convince him to
back down but they aren’t going to do it unless they feel like there’s a
massive public outcry* against Ford’s undemocratic tactics. *They're
debating the bill at 3pm today so we have to act fast.*

*Ford waited over 400 days to implement lifesaving policies *like paid sick
days in the middle of the pandemic. [3] *But in order to tip election laws
in his favour he's called the legislature back with 24 hours notice. *[4]

The notwithstanding clause is a special section in the Canadian Charter of
Rights and Freedoms and it has *never been used in Ontario’s history.* [5]
Now with his approval rating tanking, *Ford is using it to muzzle
organizations that represent everyday people *— and change election
financing laws in his favour. [6,7]

*Cabinet ministers need to hear from as many people as possible to convince
them to push back against Ford.* And with *only a few hours to go before
they gather to ram this legislation through parliament, we need to flood
their mailboxes now.*

notwithstanding clause because the supreme court ruled his attempt to
interfere in Toronto's municipal election as unconstitutional. *But massive
