Hi Patricia
Thank you so much for all of the information in your email, both your personal story and the situation for those on Social Assistance. I applaud you for all of your advocacy work despite all of the adversity you have faced and are currently experiencing. You really are an inspiration. My niece has taken insulin for almost 25 years. She has a permanent pump that gives her the dose that she requires. I know that she is very concerned about how this will affect her.

I have great respect for the Jesuit Forum and the webinars that they have hosted. I've registered for this one and hope to attend. If you have questions for the panel, perhaps you should submit them in advance. I'm not sure if that was suggested in the flyer. If it wasn't you could contact Mark Hathaway at the Jesuit Forum. The panelists may be able to address your questions even if you can't attend.

I know that you are an important part of the Sunday community. Hopefully you will be able to attend the Masses virtually once they are meeting in person.

Again thank you for sharing your story and expressing your concerns.

Hope you are enjoying this lovely weather.
Peace
Sylvia

Hi, Sylvia,

I think this is a pro-GLI event. I say that because as a person with a disability, I have my doubts about whether any basic income is going to help SA recipients who are disabled. I know that living so far below the poverty line is a disgrace to our society but at the same time, those who are disabled (and can't work) have many benefits that help with the costs of their disabilities. Until such time as a basic income (or whatever it ends up being called) can assure that those with disabilities who have high costs of living are covered, this is not going to help with the number of us who live in poverty. I hope this situation is addressed. Currently, there is a movement to establish a better disability tax credit plan with the feds. However, this is not available to those who live on social assistance programs in the various provinces, as there incomes are so low. And tax credit programs just don't help low income folks, for whatever reasons. I hope this is a truly effective tax BENEFIT program.

FYI: I have been living on ODSP for about 15 years now. Oh, I waited over 2 years, while collecting OW to get onto ODSP. Advocacy work that I have been involved with did cut that down, although it seems the Ford government is determined to bring us back to that situation. I was originally on ODSP for mental health reasons - Major Depressive Disorder. (Despite my last name, which I truly try to live up to.) Anyway, 2 years ago over 50 years of taking insulin led to an seriously infected toe on my right foot, everything was done to try to deal with this infection but it was spreading all through my foot and in the long run an amputation of my right leg was required. I can't tell you what prayers, love, visits and concern I had from our Sunday Community. They have been amazing through all the difficulties of my live since first going there in 1993. Anyway, I was concerned about physical issues before my amputation because a serious balance problem, the result of a head injury suffered by being hit by a car as a pedestrain in 1994, was getting worse. So, I now wear a prosthetic and use a walker. I wasn't using my "indoor walker" when I fell one day at home and broke my femur in what's left of the right leg. I swear the prosthetic, which is heavy, was responsible for that. I fell on my left knee and it hurt a bit but that leg is basically fine. So the break required surgery with lots of nails and screws to put the bone back together again and I need lots of rehab to strength my right leg to wear the prosthetic properly again.

My work in these past years has been advocacy - which is the paid work I was educated for and wanted to do. I ended up as a law clerk because that paid the rent but it was always contracts and temp jobs. Didn't help with the mental health. I actually love the work I do with a couple of organizations and have developed a good reputation for it.

BTW, with respect to basic income - it's too bad the Ontario pilot didn't continue. There were a few ODSP recipients on it, including some who have serious physical disabilities and needs for wheelchairs, etc. People with mental health disabilities fared better - they had more money to pay rent and buy groceries and could avoid the food bank. I think the Ontario pilot was really designed for the working poor.

Peace to you, Pat
