Hi, Everyone,

I just finished talking to Pat Smiley, who has asked that I write to you all. Pat is in hospital. She fell and broke her right femur (the leg with the prosthesis) on Tuesday when she was out doing a few errands. Frustrating in any case, but this was a venture into independence, walking to a nearby mall to do some of her own errands. She made it home, but called an ambulance on Wednesday when it was evident that there was more going on with the leg than appeared at first.

The break was significant, and she is awaiting imminent surgery to have a nail put in to facilitate healing. “You read about “pins” in situations like these,” she chuckled. "This seems to be a bit beyond that.” She is hoping that this will heal with no complications, as her amputation and transition to the prosthesis has done.

She would really like to hear from people, though she warns that (not surprisingly) she is a bit crabby at the moment. She has her phone in the hospital, and her number is on the community list. Her voice is strong, and she’s still happy to be in Hamilton, close to her daughter Rachel and Rachel’s partner Leo, who are glad to be closer to help. She hopes to see us all on Sunday at Mass.

It’s always fun and interesting to talk to Pat.

Have a pleasant rest of the day.

Lee
