Dear Catherine ,

*The groundbreaking piece of climate legislation you’ve been campaigning to
improve, Bill C-12, was sent to the federal government’s Environment
Committee for review last week.* [1]

It’s a huge opportunity for MPs to make necessary changes to ensure Bill
C-12 is based in science, puts communities and workers first, and creates
true government accountability. But after delaying Bill C-12 for months,
there’s no guarantee MPs will actually make improvements.

That's where we come in, Catherine . *Right now, the Environment Committee
wants to hear our views on Bill C-12. *[2] If we can show them that
thousands of everyday people across Canada want them to strengthen Bill
C-12, we could convince MPs to support critical amendments to the bill. *But
we have to act fast — the deadline is Monday.*

Experts, lawyers, and even opposition MPs are agreed [3-6] — key amendments
must be made to Bill C-12, including:

   - *Take bold action now, based on science and independent expertise. *Set
   the first emissions target for 2025, instead of delaying climate action
   until it’s too late.
   - *Put workers and communities first, no exceptions. *Bill C-12 should
   align with Canada’s commitment to the United Nations Declaration on the
   Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), and set targets for job creation to
   ensure no worker gets left behind as we transition to a sustainable
   economy.
   - *Create true legal accountability for government. *Set clear,
   unconditional obligations on the Minister of Environment to meet Canada’s
   climate targets.

*Catherine we know what MPs need to do, but what’s missing are the voices
of thousands of everyday people who can put a human face on decisions about
Canada’s climate laws. *If you’re a parent or grandparent worried about our
kids’ future, a young person who thinks Canada needs to act decisively to
avert climate catastrophe, or a worker concerned about your job — your
voice matters.
