Thank you, Fr. BOB! for celebrating, and BEING with us. It isgreatly appreciated!!!!
Reflection: by Greg Gillis
As we come to the end of the liturgical year and the days darken intofall/winter, the readings take on a sombre note. They focus on theeschatalogical (end times) time frame of Creation in the lead up to the feastof Christ the King. We know Advent is not far off; another season ofwaiting. The first reading from Daniel reminds us that even in thedarkest time, God is present. Daniel lived during the days of Israel’sBabylonian captivity and became an advisor to the Persian KingNabuchadnezzer. During this time, he urges the King to act justly to theJewish people and to help them in their need. He never abandons his faithin God, even when everything looks bleak. We seem to live in similarlydark times with political chaos, climate turmoil, and a constant stream of badnews. Nevertheless, we are assured like Daniel, that we are never aloneand that God never abandons His people. Thus, Paul reminds us that allsins have been forgiven. Ours is a God of justice, peace and nonviolence!
The Gospel too, continues this eschatalogical theme as Jesus describesto the disciples the end times with the warning, “that day or hour, nobodyknows it, neither the angels of heaven, nor the Son; no one but theFather.” Scripture scholars tell us that many Jews of Jesus’ day believedthe end of the world was imminent and that God would usher in an age when thepower of Rome would be vanquished and Israel restored to Davidic glory. However, as Richard Rohr remarks that really, what the literature of the endtimes is about is an unveiling of God’s plan in greater clarity. Thatsomehow, the mystery of God’s presence is being revealed to us at all times andare we paying attention? This is the critical question of our time in anage of doubt, questioning, consumerism, crisis and otherwise, fearful foreboding. Can we trust that God is revealing to us the need for greater community, generosity, loving kindness, welcoming of the stranger? What Jesus calledthe Reign of God? More and more, this seems to be where history, as weknow it, is headed to a culmination when God’s love and mercy for all will berevealed in such a way that, as Julian of Norwich says:” All shall be well, andall shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.”
