Thanks Art for all the work you have done to keep the community in touch
over the years electronically. At this time, I am grateful to you for
setting us up with Zoom services and an email account.
I do want to point out to you that so many of us use gmail accounts because
it is a free service and there are not many of those left. For those who
still have an email account through work, it sets aside work emails from
those that are more personal. There are all kinds of uses of the Internet
and modern means of communication that have their pitfalls but given the
realities of life in the 21st century, what would our lives be without
them? I remember a time in the 90s when we had a very well-organized
telephone tree and when certain things happened, everybody got a call (like
on the death of our beloved Monique. News of her funeral took the same
course.)
I don't like the advertising that often comes with my use of YouTube and
Facebook. But I do want to use these online services (and I want to
continue to use email) and it's up to me to use my own intelligence to deal
with this - as it is up to me to throw the junkmail that arrives in the
mailbox on my front porch to avoid the endless flyers there. (Or when I am
watching broadcast TV, which is rare now, to enjoy the problem and get
annoyed at the commercials - or get up and refresh my teacup or go to the
toilet.)
This technology can be expensive to maintain. Currently, there are efforts
about to insist that the Government of Ontario provide social assistance
recipients with an allowance so that they can enter the big wide world of
computers and cellphones. It seems to be beyond the ability of those
politicians to understand that when people are having difficulties on this
pittance to pay rent and buy food that insisting on electronic
communication is pushing us farther into the margins.
Anyway, I had a text a few hours ago asking me about desired Christmas
gifts and how to get them. (And getting them to me is dependent on a
middle class person who drives a vehicle big enough to get them to me.)
Again, thanks for all your dedication and hard work in resolving various
issues. Not something I would have the patience to do!
Peace, Pat
