This is about Fr. Jack Costello,  Mother Angelica, Pope Francis and The Synod. 

Preserving the word of God through the presence of God’s Spirit in creation as lived in Christ Jesus and daughters and sons of God. 

Last Sunday Fr. Jack Costello spoke of being a Conservative Catholic and explained what that meant in his spirituality.  

Jack some fifty-six years ago while preparations were being made for the Good Friday service liturgy performance said he did not want to play Jesus.  Then he asked does anyone else want to play Jesus ?

Marianne Scandiffio shot her hand up in the air and so it was to be her. It changed Marianne’s life.  Preparing herself for the role , speaking the words and then delivering the words and feelings in public was monumental. 

Now if asked by her granddaughter, does she believe in God, she answers yes before the question is even finished.  The granddaughter replied, I’m only seven so I have time to think about it. 

Mother Angelica and the woman who played Jesus 

Christina Brown a twenty-three your old actor  won the role to play Christ in liturgical production.  It was at a International youth day presentation at a stadium in Denver, Colorado in Sept. 1993. Pope John Paul II was in town but not in attendance for the  play. 

A small religious theater company cast a female mime as Jesus in a Good Friday performance. Officials of the Cincinnati-based liturgical troupe called the Fountain Square Fools insist that they chose the woman on purely arttistic, not political, grounds. The men in the group were really not suited. In the play one could not distinguish whether she was a woman or man from her clothing

Mother Angelica was a Sister of Poor Clares of Perpetual Adorationand operated a media empire the eternal word network television or EWTN.com. She is no longer with us but but her words in books and commentaries and many stunningly pious videos carry on. The network  of followers over three countries are said to be over two hundred million. She lived in Alabama. 

She was a live commentator on Fox News during the visit of Pope John Paul II's visit to Denver. On the giving the role to a woman Mother Angelica said many negatives comments about role of women in as priests and women playing Jesus . Mother Angelica called using a woman to play Jesus, a cheap liberal Catholic trick .

In America Magazine a Jesuit Review there is a piece written , Pope Francis responds to attacks from EWTN, and other Church critics. “They are the works of the devil”.  

On Sept. 13,2021 Pope Francis was before fifty-three Jesuits in Slovakia preparing for a conclave  when a Jesuit asked Pope Francis “How are You”.  The Pope answered ,  “ Still Alice, even though some people wanted me to die” 

A Q&A  continued and a full transcript of the conversation was made. 

A Jesuit asks “ How do you deal with people that look at you with suspicion. “. 

The Pope’s response is an insight of his view of Mother Angelica and others in the media as well as many other matters. 

An informal and intriguing introduction into the mind of Pope Francis and perhaps steps leading up to the upcoming Synod .

Maybe it is a source to guide us . As Pope Francis says, It is  a time for conversion.
