*What shape might resistance and hope take in these times? What sort of
spirituality can sustain us in the work for peace?*

Dear Friends,

The military budget for the USA for 2022 will likely be over $700 billion
and includes money for updating nuclear weapons. In the UK, the government
wants to invest an additional $20 billion to "focus on technologies that
will revolutionize warfare." And in Canada, the annual military budget of
$18 billion is to be increased by $60 billion over the next two decades, as
the government feels the military has been underfunded.

Canada, the UK, and the USA have not signed the United Nations Treaty on
the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. Their military spending commitments
make their commitments to the ecological crisis, poverty, racism, and
non-violent conflict resolution seem hollow.

What shape might resistance and hope take in these times? What sort of
spirituality can sustain us in the work for peace?

Our final Voices for Peace session on September 16, 2021, with the help of
John Dear and Cesar Jaramillo, will focus on these questions.

Cesar Jaramillo is the Executive Director of Project Ploughshares. We will
celebrate with him Project Ploughshares' 45 years of collaborative work
towards peace, reconciliation, and disarmament. Cesar will provide us with
current information on policy and politics in the Canadian context.

John Dear is the Founder and Executive Director of The Beatitudes Center
For The Nonviolent Jesus. He was twice nominated for the Nobel Peace Award;
served on the staff of Pace et Bene; and co-founded Campaign Nonviolence, a
week of action against poverty, war, racism, and environmental destruction.
Drawing on Gandhi and the Beatitudes, John will speak on "Returning to the
Nonviolence of Jesus: Following in the Footsteps of Active Nonviolence,
Living Gospel Nonviolence Today."
