"How Beautiful We Were" by Imbolo Mbue, published in 2021, describes
village life in a small African town, which is being harshly affected by
nearby foreign oil drilling and pipelines.
This book is not a polemic. Seen mainly through the eyes of children, it's
about how the families and the village community manages with all that is
going on.
Ms. Mbue is a "bright and captivating storyteller" (Washington Post), and
"a wonderful writer with an uncanny ear for dialogue" (NPR). Kirkus Reviews
calls "How Beautiful We Were" "A vivid and stirring picture of human beings
asserting their value to the world, whether the world cares about them or
not".
Theauthor is a native of Cameroon. who lives in New York. My copy comes
from the Toronto Public Library.
