AVIRTUAL Mass at 11:00 on ZOOM!
THANKYOU to Fr. Jack Costello (a very GOOD MAN) for celebrating MASS with us!
Reflection:
Here is my reflection for this week's People Progress:
The Parable of the Fig Tree (by Pat Smiley)
I am focussing on the parable in this reflection because my first andcursory reading of it in preparation for this mass was almost automatic. This parable speaks to me at this present moment both in my own life and in thesociety most of us in the community live in (Ontario).
As an introduction to "what's happening" here, in the world ofwhat is politely now called social assistance, once known as welfare, ourgovernment is moving to privatize the delivery of those services and has takenhuge steps (including legislations) to change the way "eligibility"is determined. None of this takes into account the human being, especiallythe human being who is disabled in some way from full-time work.
The owner of this fig tree believes that after not producing any fruit, the fig tree should be simply be cut down and discarded. It isn't makinga contribution to the orchard and hasn't for a while. But clearly thisfig tree is still alive as a tree and the gardener begs his master to give himsome manure so that he can restore this tree to productivity.
It might seem that the master has a point. After all, he expectsproduce from this orchard because as the owner he is concerned about his bottomline and wants the space to be given to trees that will produce fruit and makehim some profit for his investment.
It isn't hard for me to imagine this approach to a garden (withoutgetting into the current wave of literature on the souls of trees and otherflora). Honestly, there are some dying plants in the garden of my houseand Rachel wants to restore them as much as possible whereas I would prefer tohave them replaced. But Jesus isn't talking about that in thisparable. I also believe that every human being has a contribution to makein some way to the society, community in which they live. The manure thatthese human beings need is an income to provide themselves with the basics oflife - a decent home, good food to eat and some other essentials for modern daylife. And, with a little money in their wallets, they can make aneconomic contribution to the community.
