[Sundaycommunity] Late note - exciting visit! I wish all of you had been there.

Hi, everyone,

As some of you may have known, I spent last week in England visiting my daughter Clare. She is taking a break between jobs, so wrote and invited me to come for Mothers Day and my birthday. As soon as she sent the ticket, I did what I imagine all of you would have done. I emailed Rob and Sheila to see whether we could arrange a get-together. They were happy to accept, and Clare contacted them and worked out the details (“You visit, I’ll cook,” she said.)

So last Saturday, I met Rob and Sheila IN PERSON ! We were all so happy to see each other, and talked about a variety of things. They spoke about what a breath of fresh air our community is for them, and that of course goes both ways.

We had a lovely time. After lunch, we went for a walk around Clare’s neighbourhood. She lives in Little Venice, so named (by Robert Browning, it’s alleged,) because it’s built on the banks of some of London’s canals. Turned out that the canal that runs through Clare’s neighbourhood also runs through Rob and Sheila’s. There were lots of people out, like us enjoying the warm sunny weather. Rob and Sheila are avid and knowledgeable gardeners, so we talked about some of the trees and shrubs we encountered on our walk.  We learned a bit more about their family too. They were going from our visit to stay with their daughter Claer and her husband, and were looking forward to seeing an interesting bird. Claer is an enthusiastic bird watcher.

Clare Moncrieff took these pictures, and for some reason they were not added to the rest of my photos, and have insisted on acting unison, so it was impossible to choose one without losing them all. I figure you can bear with that. We walked to just beyond Paddington Station, and paused at the statue of one of England’s favourite bears.

Then we went our separate ways. I now have another reason for looking forward to my next visit.!
