Bill – thank you for your email and comments.

Attached is a more detailed outline.. The Ford Government is giving developers much more favourable treatment than previous Provincial governments. I call it “the Great Toronto Giveaway”.

However, there are so many luxury condos being built at the present time (800 applications in 2021) that developers are not going to find enough buyers to pay the high prices they have been selling their units for. With higher construction costs due tot the pandemic, some developers are going to go bust.

Attached is a photo of 10-16 Wellesley St West – taken at the climate march last Saturday.– it is mentioned in my article.

Thk you, David, for this very important msg.  And if I may say, I think the real estate development planning and approval process is broken / sub-optimal.  And it is at the Ontario provincial level that decision frameworks are set for very local decisions.  Back in the day, I spent a lot of time protesting OMB decisions to no avail.  :-(   Anyways, I think the province needs to get out of Municipal decision making.

Thks again, David, for your call to action.

Bill.

A young man said recently on the CBC that “the main legacy of the Ford government for Toronto is the surge in weed stores and hi-rise luxury condos”.

Over the past year I have been working with a group of concerned citizens to demand that the developer of a hi-rise condo project at the north-west corner of Bloor & Dundas West include a range of affordable units so that the area does not turn into another high income enclave. This site was zoned for about 100 units and the City agreed recently to permit Timbertrin, the developer, to build a 27 storey building with 327 units; and the only concession was 26 mid-range affordable units.  This developer and others are making huge profits based on the large increases in units being awarded by the City and the Province. The city politicians say that if they don’t agree to the requests of the developers, then the Ford government will use its powers to give them what they want. Most developers are using this situation as an excuse to not consult with neighbourhood groups, and they are not open to discussing community amenities for the neighbourhoods that are being impacted.

The affordable housing crisis is brutal in the way it is hitting the most vulnerable in our communities. One indication is the long list of individuals and families who are scheduled for eviction hearings at the Landlord & Tenant Board.

Our community group has been fortunate to have well known author and illustrator, Kevin Sylvester,  facebook.com/kevinsylvesterbooks- create the attached poster for us, highlighting the injustice of  the current housing market, and the role of the Ford government.

The Provincial election is on June 2nd and we must do all we can to hold Ford accountable. Please share this poster with your friends and ask them to pass it on.

Let us know your thoughts by responding to the email address at the bottom of the poster –BuildBetterTO at gmail.com

And please make your Vote count on June 2nd.

In Peace

David
