This was from my friend Ann. Please read it and be aware. Thanks, Catherine

Ruah. Hello dear Ruah people,

I am writing as as a follow up to our Sunday discussion of current scams,
especially for old people. I was so sorry to hear of the scam suffered by
Dianes sister.

One day in October 2022 I was phoned by a man telling me he was was a
lawyer for my granddaughter

Giselle, ( She is 18 years old and actually my great granddaughter . She
has recently been learning to drive)

The so called lawyer sounded professional and competent. He said that
Giselle had taken her Dads car

that afternoon and had struck a pregnant woman who had fallen when struck.
The woman was in hospital

suffering a miscarriage. I asked to speak to Gisellke , who came on the
phone. She was crying and told me about the incident ,deeply upset.

She sounded exactly like my great granddaughter. The “lawyer” came on the
phone again and said

Giselle could be released if she arranged for 5000 dollars bail and the
court received the money immediately. Otherwise she would be detained. He
gave me an address where he said she was currently
held.

I was to go to my bank. Get the cash and give it to the *lawyer* who would
be waiting near by.

At this point I realized this was a scam and I put the phone down, I
wondered if Giselle had been kidnapped
and was being forced to try and fool me. I phoned her home and located her.
She was fine and not involved in the scam.

What shocked me was the acting which was impeccable. The woman who
pretended to be Giselle was so accurate I wondered later if she had heard
her speak ( tape or in person)

I was terrified when I thought Giselle was in serious trouble and there was
a pregnant woman involved.

I found out this scam is called “the Granny " scam and is currently making
thousands of dollars

for the scammers. It is said that the Grannies will do anything to help
their grandchildren.

People need to be warned about this scam because the Grannies become
dangerously terrified. They also are robbed of money ,of course.

What still amazes me is as how accurately Giselle was imitated. I knew it
was very
unlikely that Giselle would take her Dads car, but the actor sounded
exactly like her.

I did not join in the Ruah discussion on scamming on Sunday because I fell
silent. I realize I was

suffering from residual shock.

I am Ok now , just amazed at the inventiveness and general successfulness
of the scammers.They
had Giselles name and age right , they had my name and phone number right.

With all best wishes and in hope we are not fooled by scammers, and we warn
the people in our lives.

Ann
