Hi, folks,

The disability advocacy community was rocked by the announcement of the
death of David Onley this past week. (I wasn't really in a position here
in the hospital to make this prayer.). David Onley started his public as
the wheelchair bound weather announcer for City-TV. Those of you from
Toronto may remember him. He continued working as a journalist for many
years and was appointed the Lieutenant-Governor of Ontario in 2007. In
later years he used a small electriv scooter to get around - he was able to
drive a van that accommodated his disability and his scooter. He made a
major contribution to disabiity advocacy most recently in the commissioned
report he wrote for the Ontario government on the implementation of the
Accessibility for Ontarians With Disabilities Act. (Otherwise known as the
AODA.) And, he advocated for job opportunities and more accessible
housing, too. (Most disabled people of working age in this country are
unemployed and live in deep poverty,)

So, for me and my friends and fellow advocaates, please say a prayer of
thanksgiving for David Onley's life and work.

Peace, Pat
