in opposition to gas plant expansion in Ontario!
As many of you may already know, late last year the Ontario government
announced its plans to meet Ontario’s increasing electricity demand by
burning more gas through existing gas-fired power plants and by building an
additional 1,500 megawatts of gas-fired generation capacity.
This past Wednesday, the Province’s electricity operator put this plan into
action and announced contracts for gas plant expansions and “upgrades” that
will increase gas generation capacity by 586 megawatts.
Currently, Ontario’s electricity grid is about 92% carbon free, based
primarily on nuclear and hydro-electric generation. However, the province
needs new electricity generation capacity as its nuclear infrastructure
ages and as the electrification of buildings, industry and transport
increases electricity demand substantially.
By ramping up gas-fired electricity rather than investing in renewables,
Ontario’s electricity sector emissions will increase 400% by 2030 and 800%
by 2040 compared to 2017 levels. For reference, this will undo nearly half
of the emissions reductions made by Ontario’s coal phase out which was
lauded as North America's single biggest emissions reduction.
Ontario phased out coal-fired electricity in large part due to the risks it
posed to public health. We are reaching out to you today to do the same for
fossil gas, given its role in accelerating the climate crisis and its
contributions to air pollution. As healthcare professionals, you are
amongst the most trusted voices in your community and can play an important
role in communicating the impacts that these gas expansions pose.
