Dear friends,

I am writing today to update you on the status of the Safe Third Country
Agreement (STCA) – an inhumane policy the Federal Court of Canada
previously ruled unconstitutional in 2020.

On March 24th, Prime Minister Trudeau and President Biden announced a
drastic expansion of the agreement – extending its conditions to the entire
US/Canada border. These changes mean asylum seekers will be turned away at
the border, without the opportunity to present their case before the IRCC.
If they cross successfully, asylum seekers can be apprehended and deported
within 14 days of crossing the border.

These changes, negotiated in secret, are a violation of our international
commitments to human rights, and the principles that Canada is meant to
stand for. They will force asylum seekers into more dangerous routes across
the border and cause more deportations back to people’s home countries.
These changes are dangerous, and will lead to the deaths of vulnerable
people who were only seeking a safe community to call home.

I believe these measures are wrong. My NDP colleagues and I are calling on
the government

reverse the changes – torn straight from the Trump playbook – and to
suspend the STCA agreement entirely.

I have sponsored a parliamentary petition calling for the government to
scrap the changes and suspend the STCA, and hope that you will add your
voice to the chorus of others who oppose these cruel, inhumane changes. You
