*“It’s getting harder and harder to find words to describe how crazy this
really is.”* [1]

That is the reaction a climate researcher had last week to skyrocketing sea
surface temperatures in the North Atlantic Ocean. And he’s not the only
one: climate scientists all over the world are sharing shocking charts of
record-breaking heat, record-low Antarctic sea ice extent, record-breaking
marine heatwaves and record high levels of carbon dioxide in the
atmosphere. [2]

Records that should never have been broken. Records that indicate climate
tipping points. Records that are prompting some scientists to say 2023 may
be the year everything changes. [3]

But changes in which direction? Piercing through the darkness, you will
find a sliver of light: the window of opportunity has not closed…yet.
Scientists have said that if governments act now to reduce emissions, we’ve
still got a fighting chance. [4]

We can’t let that window close – we need to throw it wide open with the
bold climate action we were promised when this government was first
elected. Now is the moment to remind Justin Trudeau who he works for.

After all, you may recall, Justin Trudeau was elected on a mandate to take
strong measures on climate change. He went on to declare an official
Climate Emergency and then the very next day…approved a massive expansion
of the Trans Mountain pipeline project. [5]

If it feels like words aren’t matching actions, you would be correct: acting
on climate change is overwhelmingly in conflict with expanding fossil fuel
production. UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres has said it repeatedly:
to ensure a climate-safe future, governments must immediately phase out
fossil fuels, leave coal, oil and gas in the ground where it belongs, and
invest in a just transition to clean energy. [6]

Which is what scientists are urgently calling on governments to do at the
UN climate summit COP28 this fall. [7] We need Canada to enter those talks
ready to walk the talk and lead by example. Will you send Justin Trudeau a
strong message? We are done with lip-service and actionless words.

Climate science is only getting more accurate when it comes to tying fossil
fuel emissions directly to extreme weather events. A growing field of
research called *Attribution Science* has analyzed more than 500 such
events finding 93% of heatwaves and 68% of droughts have been made more
severe and/or more likely from greenhouse gas emissions. [8] Likewise,
research – released at the beginning of what is quickly becoming Canada’s
worst wildfire season on record – revealed that around one third of forests
burned in North America since 1986 can be tied to emissions from the
world’s largest polluters. [9]

But the same scientists who warned for decades of the very fossil-fueled
floods, fires and heatwaves that are gripping the world as we speak have
given us the solution: if we stop the burning of fossil fuels, we can avoid
the worst of what’s to come.

If you are overwhelmed, if you are heartbroken, if you are filled with fear
of imminent climate collapse – I’m calling on you now. Unite behind the
science we know is right and tell Justin Trudeau: take immediate measures
to reduce emissions, halt new fossil fuel development, and rapidly
transition towards sustainable, renewable energy sources.

I know things are feeling bleak, but my hope remains unwavering. Why?
Because I’ve seen what people-powered movements can do when we rise up
together. I watched as public pressure secured a historic Global Ocean
Treaty. I was with you when Canada pushed back against Deep Sea Mining
companies and called for a moratorium.

Now we enter the big time as we prepare to wrestle our planet – and our
collective future – out of the grip of the deadly fossil fuel industry. The
stakes are higher than they’ve ever been. But in the words of one climate
scientist, “it’s not game over. It’s game on.” [10]

That window of opportunity is open, and it’s ours to take.
