Hello Charles,

As Canada experiences a record-shattering summer of deadly extreme weather,
our national pension fund continues to pour our hard-earned retirement
savings into the primary cause of the climate crisis: fossil fuels.

In doing so, *the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (CPPIB) is
undermining its own purpose*: to provide us with retirement security– which
is impossible without a safe climate future to retire into.

The CPPIB is a $575-billion global investment behemoth that manages the
Canada Pension Plan on behalf of 21 million Canadians. *As Canada burns,
the CPPIB is betting our national retirement savings on investments that
require expanding and prolonging oil and gas production to generate returns*
.

In doing so, the CPPIB is accelerating the climate crisis, making extreme
weather more likely and more intense, and risking billions of dollars on an
industry that must be phased out to avert catastrophic climate outcomes.

*The CPPIB’s continued investment in fossil fuels is irreconcilable with
its net-zero emissions commitment and its purpose of providing Canadians
with retirement security across an investment horizon that spans decades.*

Like millions of Canadians from coast to coast to coast, I have no choice
but to contribute to the Canada Pension Plan with every paycheque. I’d like
to collect those compounded savings when I retire in a few decades. But
that money might not be there if CPPIB keeps risking it on fossil fuels.

It’s astounding that CPPIB won’t acknowledge that there is no retirement
security without a safe climate to retire into.

*Time is running out. Governments and pension funds must take decisive
climate action now**. We need more Canadians to join our movement. Please
take the first step by sending a letter to the CPPIB
