*Dr. Pritchard and Dr. Zeni on journeying with women through pregnancy.*
Dr. Jane Pritchard is a family medicine physician in Toronto but has worked
around the world.
"I went to Australia for two years, and stayed for 12 years, working in the
ER and doing locums for GPs in Australia's private health care system. In
1980, I went to Bangladesh for three years with Mennonite Central Committee
and learned about the social determinants of health. When Michael, who was
born there, was four months old, I started working in the non-gyne medical
outpatient department of a Hindu charity hospital, where I saw firsthand
the medical consequences of poverty and injustice, most concentrated, it
seemed, on women and their girl children.
We moved, now with my son Paul, to Toronto in 1987, and I found an
opportunity to work with Latin American refugees arriving from war-torn El
Salvador, Guatemala, Nicaragua and later Colombia. I listened to their
stories and learned a lot. Those who came then as children are still my
patients today, with children of their own. So I was doing family practice
in an urban setting, but with a very special group of people; who had
experienced much trauma, and overcame many obstacles, but the memories are
always with them.
At the same time, I started to work with marginally housed or
homeless people in Toronto, at a drop in centre for women downtown. I have
listened to the stories of many indigenous women over those 30+ years, and
tried to help them manage the bodily diseases that come from being torn
from home and family at an early age and subjected to much abuse.*The
reward is in gaining a measure of trust. The cost is losing too many too
soon*."
Dr. Deborah Zeni is a family physician in Georgetown, Ontario and so much
more. "I am a friend, a mother to 4 wonderful men, a Nonna for 6
grandchildren, a theologian, an educator and a preacher who believes that
love truly does make the world go round.
I share a family practice with Dr. Paul Zeni - my husband of 44 years. We
are part of a Family Health Team and a Family Health Organization. We
provide medical care for all ages from cradle to grave - including prenatal
care and palliative care. Currently, *my practice has an above average
number of women who have experienced trauma or considerable hardship*. Many
have been referred into our practice by other physicians.
This past June I took what I believe is the last of many hair-raising,
stomach churning lights and sirens trips that I have taken with a
critically ill child from Georgetown to the Hospital for Sick Children. I'm
leaving the heroic adrenaline surging saving of lives of children to
younger physicians. For many of the same reasons I will be 'giving up' what
has been a wonderful part of my career - caring for pregnant women and
attending the births of their babies."
------------------------------
This is a lecture on sharing wisdom, experience, and knowledge. A lecture
in which two doctors will come together to share all they have learned over
their careers and the insights they can share with the next generation. It
will provide a true glimpse into family medicine and pregnancy care. "
*Frankly,* *I often feel I am out of my comfort zone*," explained Dr.
Pritchard, "Though that is often what family practice is like!"
Dr. Zeni describes practicing medicine as a "*lifetime privilege and
enjoyment*" and one she is not ready to walk away from quite yet. "Remember
the adage: practice makes perfect. I'm nowhere near a 'perfect' doctor, so
I need to continue to practice."
