Yea! Catherine

Your monthly roundup of good news for the climate
Dear Catherine,
As we leap into a year that gifts us an extra day, it’s a fitting time to
celebrate extraordinary leaps in the ongoing journey toward environmental
sustainability and economic justice. This February, we’re not just marking
time, we’re marking significant victories and innovations that promise a
greener, more equitable world. From a landmark legal victory defending
climate science to a bold governmental stand against fossil fuel expansion,
from a groundbreaking battery recycling method to an inventive energy
storage solution, each is a step forward in our collective quest to protect
and preserve our planet.

Truth wins in case against climate science deniers
Attacking the solid evidence for human-caused global warming is serious.
It’s slowed necessary action to address the crisis. So it’s good news that
two people who tried to discredit one of the world’s top climate
scientists, Michael Mann, have been ordered to pay for their false
accusations. A jury ordered conservative writer Mark Steyn to pay $1
million and co-defendant Rand Simberg to pay $1,000.

U.S. president stands up to Big Oil
Finally, a U.S. administration has called BS on the fracked methane gas
industry (misleadingly referred to as “natural” gas). The government
recently stopped granting permits for new liquefied fossil gas, or LNG,
export terminals. Although the halt is “provisional,” in that the energy
department will look at the possibility of issuing licences if the latest
science is considered, it shines a light on the dangers of this fossil fuel
and the advantages of renewable energy. If only the B.C. government would
follow suit.

Piss and vinegar make battery recycling better
Moving from fossil fuels to electrification means more batteries. And those
require minerals often mined in unsustainable ways. A key metal in
lithium-ion batteries is cobalt. Recycling materials such as cobalt has so
far been energy intensive. But a team from Linnaeus University in Sweden
and the Indian Institute of Technology Madras in India have discovered a
way to recover cobalt using a solvent made from urea, found in urine, and
acetic acid, or vinegar. The efficient method uses far less energy and the
solvent is “readily available and relatively harmless.”

Old mine transforms to gravity battery
In the Finnish community of Pyhäjärvi, a 1,400-metre-deep decommissioned
zinc and copper mine is being turned into a giant battery by Scotland-based
company Gravitricity. As this article explains, “When there is excess power
— from wind turbines on a windy day for example — weights would be winched
up the Pyhäsalmi mine’s 530-metre auxiliary shaft. To generate energy these
weights can be released. This turns the winches into generators, creating
either a short burst of electricity or a slower trickle depending on what
is needed.”
