I was in Haiti in 2007 and though it had troubles then, I felt it had more
potential than Papua New Guinea where I had been. Then, the tragedy of the
January 12, 2010 earthquake, followed by cholera etc. set the country back
again. The Spiritans in TransCanada sent a good deal of help to rebuild our
huge school in Port Au Prince - College St. Martial (built 1865) - a K-12
school. This was a wonderful school but was 3/4 destroyed by the
earthquake. Slowly, it reopened in tents, then temp class rooms, and
eventually things were getting back to normal. I visited Haiti again in
2017, and was so hopeful about the school and also our rural ministries.
However, the very first night I was there, one could sense warning signs.
The Superior took me and another Spiritan out but every so often, you could
hear gunfire (gangs). We were told we should head back soon. There were
also times when the Spiritans from Haiti had to hunker down in the school
compound or a parish for a few nights in a row. That was back in 2017 and
it has gotten progressively worse. I was in touch monthly with the Superior
and the Bursar up until the end of 2021 but not really in the loop now due
to personnel changes. So sad to see a failed state.
More intervention or interference from outside countries at this stage will
probably do more harm than good. The UN peacekeeping force that was there
before was not only ineffective but also heavily disliked. I can’t believe
Kenya is going to send troops who of course can’t speak French.
Some solution will have to come from the ground up- not be imposed.
Compromise must be reached. But at this stage, I truly believe Haiti is
only going to get worse- complete breakdown of infrastructure and resultant
disease, hunger, death. The rural communities of course are much better off
than Port Au Prince, but even they are dependent on some resources from
some sort of functioning government.
Any Haitians that can get out are trying to go to the DR where there are
problems with Haitians.
So, another sad situation in the world that needs prayers and attention
Paul
