I saw the first image above on Facebook (the billboard), and when I researched the quote, I found the second image with the Dalai Lama. I began wondering about the veracity of the quote. I re-searched little further, and found the following on Tumblr by Alex Knapp… I thought I’d share the images above and the quote below with the Sunday Community.

…(This is) a quote attributed to the Dalai Lama where he supposedly says, "The planet does not need more successful people. The planet desperately needs more peacemakers, healers, restorers, storytellers, and lovers of every kind."

You might think, "Hm, that's a weird thing for a Buddhist Monk to say." And you'd be right!

This quote is actually from environmental scientist David Orr's book Ecological Literacy: Educating Our Children for a Sustainable World. And it's not quite a correct quote, either. The real quote is:

"The plain fact is that the planet does not need more successful people. But it does desperately need more peacemakers, healers, restorers, storytellers, and lovers of every kind. It needs people who live well in their places. It needs people of moral courage willing to join the fight to make the world habitable and humane. And these qualities have little to do with success as we have defined it."
