Canadian Friends of Peace Now decries and mourns the tragic loss of life caused by an Israeli missile attack on an aid convey in Gaza on April 2. Seven workers with World Central Kitchen were killed while on a mission to deliver desperately needed food to Gazan civilians. Prime Minister Netanyahu acknowledged that the IDF strike was done in error and promised an investigation.

How could such a mistake happen? The WCK cars were clearly marked, the aid workers had coordinated their route with the IDF. The ostensible reason for the strike (three missiles at three cars) was suspicion that an armed terrorist had joined the convoy (which turned out to be false). It’s hard not to conclude that the IDF forces on the ground are inordinately trigger happy.

The current trajectory is never-ending violence, along with increasing international isolation. Israel must bring this war to a close in a way that frees the hostages and allows for a viable future for both its own people and the Palestinians, one based on the two-state solution.

Creating a positive “day after” process will be enormously challenging. The regional conflict is hugely complex – no one should be under any illusions otherwise. But a better way forward is possible.

Progressive Israeli organizations are working mightily to combat negative trends and are leading the way towards pragmatic and constructive change. Representatives of four premier Israeli NGOs – Peace Now, Mitvim, Gisha and Breaking the Silence – will be in Canada in mid-April to talk about their visions and actions. It’s a chance to meet these experts and activists in person, gain a better understanding of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and learn how you can support the peace builders.
