Thanks Dean for posting the video. It was quite interesting. In many
parishes, I suppose that no one has heard of Rerum Novarum and probably
many think that JPIC is some sort of Catholic Johnny come lately optional
add on.
Overall, the Church has not done a great job at presenting social teaching.
A couple of weeks ago, I was in another church and commented as such about
Acts 4
”All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of
their possessions was their own, but they shared everything they had.“
”With great power the apostles continued to testify to the resurrection of
the Lord Jesus. And God’s grace was so powerfully at work in them all that
there were no needy persons among them. For from time to time those who
owned land or houses sold them, brought the money from the sales and put it
at the apostles’ feet, and it was distributed to anyone who had need.“ Acts
4:32 - 35
I found particular interest in the video contrasting secular systems - one
that seeks justice for the poor but becomes despotic and kills freedom and
the other that extols prosperity and freedom but becomes unjust and
neglects the poor. Both systems of course are flawed and end up destroying
human dignity. This is reiterated again and again in Laudato Si and many of
the other writings of our beloved Pope Francis. (We are lucky to have him!)
Thanks again for the food for thought.
