CFPN doubles support to Settlement Watch in 2024

We are delighted to announce that we are doubling our funding to Peace Now’s flagship program, Settlement Watch, this year to help the movement promote Israeli-Palestinian peace via the two-state solution.


We can do this because of the many generous donors who boosted their support to us during 2023, a tragic year that underlined the urgent need for a new way forward for both peoples. Heartfelt thanks to every one of you who donated and all who supported in other ways.


Established about 30 years ago, Settlement Watch is the key watchdog over the West Bank settlement enterprise in Israel.


The program has a huge database and expert staff. It monitors and exposes every aspect of settlement growth, publishing detailed, reliable, accurate reports. It is a highly regarded, trusted source of information on settlements for media, diplomats, educators and the general public.


Peace Now wants many more Israelis to know about the alarming data regarding Israel’s march towards annexation and entrenched occupation through settlements – a dangerous, dead-end road. Our Peace Now colleagues will launch a new, comprehensive public education campaign this summer titled “Two States – The Real Victory.” And that’s where Canadian Friends of Peace Now comes in. As the war against Hamas drags on and as the northern border heats up, Israelis have not paid enough attention to what’s been happening in the West Bank. The extremist right, aided by a hard-right government, has been moving full-speed ahead to establish “facts on the ground” that will block chances for a two-state solution and peace. Housing units, land grabs, infrastructure, livestock farms, and various opaque activities – all have been mushrooming since the establishment of the Netanyahu government in Dec. 2022. Settler violence aimed at pushing Palestinians off their land has accelerated too. The Peace Now campaign will ensure as many Israelis as possible realize that the messianist settler movement will bring about Israel’s eventual destruction. Only a two-state solution can bring real security.


The CFPN-funded Settlement Watch awareness campaign will include: educational outreach, media engagement, immersive experiences (e.g. guided tours to the West Bank for select groups), social media campaigns and special activities such as petitions. A key target audience will be members of the liberal democratic camp, where the potential for influence is greatest. The hope is to involve thousands, potentially even tens of thousands, of participants, strengthening the base of support for the two-state solution.


Settlement Watch work has impact. We want to help Peace Now make sure that more such media coverage occurs, that more Israelis wake up to the disaster that extremist policies are engendering. The only outcome the hard-right agenda will create is an increasingly violent one-state reality. The only viable alternative is a negotiated agreement for two states – Israel and Palestinian – living side by side in peace, with agreed upon security guarantees for each.


Peace Now is the sole movement in Israel wholly devoted to championing the two-state solution. This year, 2024, is sure to be a critical year for this endeavour. The time for action is now.
