[Sundaycommunity] Signs of the times . . .

Hi all,

I am getting settled into my new digs in this subsidized, city-owned
apartment building. I realize I have never lived in such a big apartment
building before, nor had to go up and down the elevator to get to my own
unit. I will appreciate the various activities that are put on by the City
of Hamilton here, esp. in the winter. I was becoming a bit too reclusive
in that little house where I was living before.

I haven't really had to use a food bank for a few years now but I went to
what is called the food market here because some of my neighbours
encouraged me to check it out and offered to find me some things that are
good for my diabetic diet. The sign of the times is that the Hamilton food
bank system no longer has enough food to distribute here. I did manage to
get some produce (lettuce, cucumber, potatoes, a bagged salad, a couple of
nectarines) but that was about all they had. That's fine. This is the
last time this food bank will be in the building, as they just don't have
enough food donations to distribute. You all have noticed the steep costs
at the grocery store. The weeks' worth of groceries that I paid $70 or so
for 5 years ago is now costing me about $100. It's a pretty basic but
healthy diet.

So, please consider wherever you shop and give a couple of donations at the
grocery store. Or, if you feel you can afford it, send a cheque or some
monetary donation to your local food bank.

Thanks, Pat
