Heartbreak at Lucia’s failed treatment and transition to palliative care turned to shock upon learning of her death that occurred so rapidly.

It has been difficult to find adequate words of response. Hence, my delay.

Lucia embraced life passionately and courageously. She was multilingual and well travelled. She was a real ‘foodie’ and a great cook. (We went on various diets, challenging each other.) Before Covid, she brought wonderful baked goods from the Harbord bakery (my favourite) to Mass on Sundays. She loved her cat beyond measure. She was a mother figure to David, in Toronto, the son of her dear Brazilian friend, Luna, who lives in Israel.

She enjoyed her translation work in the courts (French and Portuguese)and group centres. As Sheila has written, she was particularly drawn to those on the margins , providing ongoing support and friendship.

Lucia was a woman of faith. She remained a Eucharistic minister at Saint Joan of Arc parish even after joining our community. Her faith strengthened and sustained her and she accepted the possibility of death with grace and total abandonment to God.

Go with God, dear Lucia!
Va com Deus, querida Lucia!
