Let me quote *Soline Humbert Vatinel*, who has carried a call to priesthood
since her youth:

*“I am now in my sixties, I have never lost that sense of vocation despite
the church authorities’ determined efforts to kill it or to persuade me to
abandon it. Pope Francis, who is all in favor of open doors, is only the
latest pope to reaffirm that the door to women priests is closed… Obviously
he believes we have nothing of value to communicate, no truth to share, no
word from the Spirit. It has been the official church policy and practice
to this very day to treat us as non-persons, to shun us, to freeze us out.
In a patriarchal church we simply don’t exist.”*

She goes on:

*“There is widespread spiritual abuse in the church…. I am talking about
church rules, teachings, practices which do injury to one’s spirit and
conscience, which are destructive and anything but life-giving. They are so
much part and parcel of the church culture, have been sacralised and
decreed as divinely endorsed, they are mostly not even recognised
consciously as being abusive.” **

Her words are also about all women in our Church. They could equally be
about us excluded LGBT+. Or about all those of us in “irregular”
relationships. Or in other denominations, faiths and marriages. Or all
those of us practising birth-control. Or - the most silenced of all -
our vulnerable people and children who are physically, mentally or
spiritually abused.
The October 2024 Synod concluded without action on women’s leadership or
the possibility of ordination to the diaconate or priesthood. Yet this was
the very move that we, the faithful, had most asked for in our
deliberations.
