This video lecture is such an excellent resource. It encapsulates the
Lenten liturgical readings for this year, i.e. love our enemies, don't
judge others etc.
This lecture gives a different perspective on the theme in which I have
largely been misunderstood. I have been encouraging others to try and
see the positive in our adversaries. As Christians, we must be open to
those who have a different perspective on reality.
Shriver in this lecture identifies our culture as a culture of
contempt. We live in a world polarized into camps that thrive on
reciprocal demonization of the other camp. .
Check out “A Contemplative Mind: The Antidote to Reciprocal Demonization?”

I am also forwarding Tom Walsh's email on the topic, which includes the
newsletter of the WCCM Christian meditation community and a link to the
video lecture on the WCCM website.

[Mission] WCCM, A Contemplative Mind, the Antidote to Reciprocal
Demonization" by Tim Shriver,
Hola Friends
I think this WCCM talk , "*A Contemplative Mind, the Antidote to
Reciprocal Demonization*" by Tim Shriver is useful as he explores
contempt and dignity in our relationships. His NGO has developed a
"Dignity Index" which each one of us can apply to ourselves. Tim
Shriver is a nephew of JFK.
Lawrence Freeman, the WCCM director, who just had his bladder removed
due to cancer also participates in the conference.
The WCCM in Ottawa folks felt that this conference and the work of
Dignity was secular enough that it could be used with students and
others who are losing hope but are wary of anything "religious".
Dignity appears to bridge the gap by having people examine ourselves
for contemptuous behaviour and then by explaining that meditation with
action can move us beyond our jagged perception of relationships and the
hopelessness of being divided and hateful.
A couple of gems that I heard in the conference were...
* "Love the sinner, hate the sin".
* "The tag team from hell are nihilism and narcissism".
* "The relationship between contempt and contemplation".
* "Contemplation puts the missing "t" into mediation".
* "Keeping us divided and contemptuous is a 2 Trillion a year industry".
Lawrence and the WCCM are quite good at attracting distinguished
scholars, diplomats, public leaders, business people etc offering them
opportunities within the movement, something the rest of the Church can
learn from as it sheds itself from the narrowness of clericalism. Tim
Shriver is a good example of this, as is Mark Carney.

The recent online session, “A Contemplative Mind: The Antidote to
Reciprocal Demonization?”, was so powerful and important for our times
that we decided to make it publicly available. In the session, Tim
Shriver explored ways we can relearn to live together, even when we
disagree.
