<b>The finish line is in sight for Bill C-22 and the Canada Disability Benefit (CDB).</b> After passing in the House last week, the Senate must approve it one more time before it can become law. [1]<br><br>
<b>But, the Senate is about to adjourn for summer. </b> [2] We must make sure Bill C-22 is passed before then – if not, the CDB could be delayed. <i>Again.</i> [3] <b>People with disabilities can’t wait any longer.</b><br><br>
<b>40 percent of people living in poverty in Canada have a disability,</b> yet the disability poverty crisis is virtually invisible to those who do not experience it. [4] People with disabilities have waited for too long to receive the life-saving supports this bill would begin to give them. <b>We can’t leave them waiting any longer.</b><br><br>
We have a small window of time to act, Brenda. Last week, the House of Commons voted again on Bill C-22 and the CDB – in what has been a two-year process since the bill was first tabled in 2021. MPs from all parties voted to accept all but one of the Senate’s amendments. The bill now goes back to Senate for a final vote before it can become law. [5] <br><br>
It’s unacceptable that it’s taken so long for folks with disabilities to get the support they need to live their lives with dignity. <br><br>
And while not perfect in its current form — the bill only covers working Canadians under 65 – <b>it is a necessary first step to move people up to at least the poverty line. <br><br>
