<p>Before we welcome Shabbat at sundown, we recognize today's International Women's Day. It is impossible to recognize the many successes of women and girls without also recognizing the mass suffering they face in Israel and Gaza, as the Israel-Hamas war wages
on.</p>
<p>Today we are thinking about women like <strong><a href="https://www.jspacecanada.ca/r?u=KFQSwhl5sgxuomNEkX6CfOfl0J5qU25N5T0ink2XbeiC6lMGcnPFOtmijXHzKi7IQLRwY0-kgip0inZjvSP0a9sMDs5nquqz3Nna9GFS1XMnBJHZzGtV5JwdVFaS6O8e&e=e01a8ccbbbe0751f0a6034ddfd2979fa&utm_source=jspace&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=shabbatemail_march82024&n=2">Vivian
Silver</a></strong>, a Canadian-Israeli peace activist who was murdered at the hands of Hamas terrorists in Kibbutz Be'eri on October 7.</p>
<p>We are thinking about the women kidnapped by Hamas on October 7 - <strong><a href="https://www.jspacecanada.ca/r?u=tdADx8eKtARFyLkuoG3WvrkI4SqgXL_vKRovJWpRP0fvJPSTsvLV34MqgdGrVjbtrt9n6MpNa7ddH-0pTUm4gqmEwGvogOOTNWivDicDhdhGBvN638g7ZmABHvI3nncJERW9wGbPqfGKeazKLwCpQ5Uy8I37BZ_GeEF-y2TNWd0&e=e01a8ccbbbe0751f0a6034ddfd2979fa&utm_source=jspace&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=shabbatemail_march82024&n=3">those
who remain in captivity</a></strong> for over 150 days now, and those who were released, thankfully alive, but forever

<p>We are thinking about the mothers of hostages still held in Gaza, <strong><a href="https://www.jspacecanada.ca/r?u=ufdZpdDRfZ5ZIVUnexxpOv4Gb6mO0ciKKCpo__MFl0qrND_1HRTIOg1MaKaSgVaTzBO8tw01rGfU6s5tMz_yJ2zIeqwAvMTbITwt3qYRg9-efldAaKcoH_8wT9Ybll-MmDnQIF6XDZYlnWpQj-aENg&e=e01a8ccbbbe0751f0a6034ddfd2979fa&utm_source=jspace&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=shabbatemail_march82024&n=5">who
descend onto Tel Aviv's Ayalon Highway</a></strong> every Saturday night to fill the air with their primal screams, for someone, anyone, to listen to their pleas that their children be released, that a deal be made, and that their nightmare come to an end.</p>
<p>We are thinking about the <strong><a href="https://www.jspacecanada.ca/r?u=qWFCUV_zF2JRgPHLMDC68F2ZXMsv9IU4Hl9256qGutFcaG5IWomaenYDuuESkcq0_3fYoWTCuNL0uI81FF_3M1SeGGd7EYxPhNKTmRmXE_srs3RpH5vC52BQQkShbUUCzTAe-7FfQujwROrIqcmh1Q&e=e01a8ccbbbe0751f0a6034ddfd2979fa&utm_source=jspace&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=shabbatemail_march82024&n=6">thousands
of women and girls in Gaza</a></strong> - so many of whom are merely a name on a list, as the death toll grows every day - who had whole lives ahead of them. Who dreamed of a better future, who dreamed of peace, who wanted nothing more than freedom. </p>
<p>We are thinking about <strong><a href="https://www.jspacecanada.ca/r?u=OoY8W_L_KV02wKQp4zzETi3w-nDITEtX9adNxjuX1QD3ScvK05S2-BeUH45FOsRg6M65wA1OrQi-vK0A3e3otqzPd5GD_f3EwZaWqGYajtxSPDNRLWsYVgbr6YM-v1Vb&e=e01a8ccbbbe0751f0a6034ddfd2979fa&utm_source=jspace&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=shabbatemail_march82024&n=7">mothers
forced to give birth in unbearable conditions</a></strong>, hospitals with no beds, electricity, or medical supplies, who bring children into a war zone rife with starvation, where each day guarantees no promise of a next.</p>
<p>In armed conflict, we know that women and girls are disproportionately affected, bearing the brunt of food insecurity, displacement, human trafficking, sexual violence, and a lack of access to reproductive healthcare. </p>
<p>But we also know that women have a strength that can bring about incredible change. In Israel-Palestine, this is evident through organizations such as Women Wage Peace and Women of the Sun,
<strong><a href="https://www.jspacecanada.ca/r?u=fT_6G4IkzBP_41vIZLg-HYSU8FXy-cF3Ga3RQ-N4vWIS7cf7mgRty00x_Dzgdz-I8XM3sdh0YbnQIfLEyNgbj6Vld9Yn31pNRF9qQcomoq4&e=e01a8ccbbbe0751f0a6034ddfd2979fa&utm_source=jspace&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=shabbatemail_march82024&n=8">both
honoured in this year's TIME Magazine's Women of the Year.</a></strong></p>
<p>We saw women leading the initiative to <strong><a href="https://www.jspacecanada.ca/r?u=ZyO_DFWWRDvdu31LHzZ70SV8QTl8oqipt5BqNJ3amOX0VdXjRgeYl7sXjhh726c29RyIGsmhcUZirBATOdLYHQ&e=e01a8ccbbbe0751f0a6034ddfd2979fa&utm_source=jspace&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=shabbatemail_march82024&n=9">bring
an aid truck from Israel into the besieged Gaza</a></strong>, in an attempt to provide food, water, and medical supplies to those suffering under unbearable conditions.</p>
<p>We are seeing these glimmers of hope, this unwillingness to give up, an understanding that without a significant paradigm shift, the land of Israel-Palestine and all its inhabitants will be destined to never-ending cycles of bloodshed and pain. This fight
does not always stem from hope or optimism. It is pragmatic - it comes from knowing that without fighting back, without demanding a better future, we let those who profit most from this pain win.</p>
<p>This coming week is full of unknowns for the region. Though international mediators were hopeful about progress made on a ceasefire and hostage release deal being finalized before Ramadan,

to most recent reports</a></strong>, Israel has been willing to accept the terms but Hamas is refusing, allowing its people to continue to suffer for its own political gains, hazy as they are.</p>
<p>A lack of agreement also means a <strong><a href="https://www.jspacecanada.ca/r?u=_u8BN3GJjkDqOlX5dN5neI-6Nhga174HHtRLFV8d8nQI9tj8bJ6OLeI3p7GHCrxzFGWp8xn24GcLggaR6byMyngd2SZkh_wSL39_4Tu9FGYgqd-ajFCsqkZSuOT2xfimKYrZY8pKI8cOjXXGVTjv2eNriMcFl-uD7nZIvY3WLB0&e=e01a8ccbbbe0751f0a6034ddfd2979fa&utm_source=jspace&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=shabbatemail_march82024&n=11">potential
Israeli incursion into Rafah</a></strong>, the tiny Southern city in Gaza currently holding over one million displaced Palestinians. Israel has yet to provide any plans or demonstrate how to safely evacuate the civilians of the region. This hopefully indicates
an incursion is not immediate, but could also point to a lack of pre-planning or strategy on the part of the Israelis, which would be consistent with the rest of this war.</p>

another hotbed of conflict, the Temple Mount/Haram Al Sharif in Jerusalem</a></strong>, tensions will surely rise once again as Ramadan begins early next week, and Netanyahu's extreme right-wing coalition partners look to fan the flames and create chaos at
the site.</p>
<p>It will take all of us, all those who believe that a better future is possible, all those who wish to see an end to wars, to suffering, to make a change, but it is possible.</p>
<p>We need merely to look to the brave women on the frontlines of this fight, unwilling to give up, unwavering in their principles, spreading hope among despair, to know that we are not alone. We can rise up to fix what is broken and change what harms us all.</p>
<p>It is through holding this hope, this inspiration, that we are also excited to announce today our

<p>In Ecclesiastes, we learn that there is a season and time for every experience under heaven. It is now a time to love, a time to heal, a time for peace, and it will be us -- those who care about Israel-Palestine and all its inhabitants, those who want to
see an end to the bloodshed, those who know we are not destined to live forever by the sword -- who will get us there.</p>
