The Core Group made up of France, UK, USA, Canada et al has been interfering for years in Haiti and it was never forgiven for being the one nation to overthrow the white slave holders. Thus, constant meddling in its internal affairs to destabilize and keep it impoverished has been the norm. Canada is deeply resented for our assistance in helping to overthrow the socialist government of Jean-Bertrand Aristide who was whisked out of the country by US Marines as Canadian Special Forces seized the airport and helped facilitate the overthrow of his democratically elected government. I visited Haiti again in 2017, and was so hopeful about the school and also our rural ministries. However, the very first night I was there, one could sense warning signs. The Superior took me and another Spiritan out but every so often, you could hear gunfire (gangs). We were told we should head back soon. There were also times when the Spiritans from Haiti had to hunker down in the school compound or a parish for a few nights in a row. That was back in 2017 and it has gotten progressively worse. I was in touch monthly with the Superior and the Bursar up until the end of 2021 but not really in the loop now due to personnel changes. So sad to see a failed state. </div><div dir="auto">More intervention or interference from outside countries at this stage will probably do more harm than good. The UN peacekeeping force that was there before was not only ineffective but also heavily disliked. I can’t believe Kenya is going to send troops who of course can’t speak French. </div><div dir="auto">Some solution will have to come from the ground up- not be imposed. Compromise must be reached. But at this stage, I truly believe Haiti is only going to get worse- complete breakdown of infrastructure and resultant disease, hunger, death.
